Even in a recession, we’re pretty loyal to our favorite brands.
Economists who study these things watch the food we eat, the clothes we buy and the gas we put in our car. It’s all part of a mission to find out what we are willing to scrimp on when cash is harder to come by.
But even though shoppers are buying store-brand items more often now, the National Retail Federation and grocery marketing groups have found we don’t mind paying a few cents more for Crest instead of generic toothpaste. In the bakery aisle, we’re generally not as fickle. Cheaper store brand wins out over Wonderbread every time. Same thing with bleach. Loyalty doesn’t mean as much as the whitest whites when tempted with a bargain.
So how do you feel about brand name health insurance?
Whether you have coverage today or not, you’ll be looking a little more closely at the brand-centric value of the biggest names in health insurance if the Obama administration succeeds in bringing a national health insurance exchange to market.
The word “exchange” usually means someone is going to trade one thing for something else. Like in a department store, we exchange clothes that don’t fit or maybe were given to us for Christmas from our cooky aunt who thinks polka dots are fashion-forward. Either way, an exchange implies value. The national health insurance exchange will work a little differently.
Without getting too specific, it’s probably best to think of the proposed insurance exchange as a big open flea market where a bunch of companies are manning their booths --- online and in person --- competing for a chance to cover your medical needs. Some companies will offer better coverage in exchange for a higher deductible, just as they do today. Others will tempt you with discounts if you happen to have car or renter’s insurance with them already.
In this scenario, the value of your health has already been assessed. Pre-existing or long-term medical issues don’t matter. You breathe, you have money (or in some cases, government vouchers), you need health insurance. That’s all you need to participate in the swap meet. All things being equal, the marketplace for health insurance will become one driven by sheer demand --- Not by how healthy you may or may not be, as the market dictates today.
So how is the insurance exchange any different than buying an individual policy available today?
For starters, your coverage will be cheaper. When you pay your premium every month, a portion of your premium goes to pay your medical claims, another goes to pay the company’s employees and keep the lights on. What’s left over is gravy. When you buy your own health insurance policy, the insurer is essentially telling you it’s willing to bet you won’t get sick enough to cut into their profits.
But when you go to the doctor too much, you pay your deductible faster and the insurer’s coverage has to start paying sooner. There’s less gravy. Less gravy makes investors mad.
The national insurance exchange, as proposed, would combine you with all the rest of the uninsured people in the United States so you’d qualify for a lower group rate. The insurance company takes less of a financial risk by insuring you because even though you may get sick, thousands of other healthy insured people may not use their coverage much at all. That means more gravy.
Another benefit of the national health insurance exchange is transparency.
Besides the Obama administration’s requirement that health insurance companies provide better disclosure of benefits and coverage exclusions to their policyholders, more companies hawking for your business means more regulation by the states they do business in. Similar to regulations recently passed to govern the banking industry, insurance companies will be required to simplify their policies so you can compare one company’s benefits with another in a straightforward way.
Just like no two brands of toothpaste are alike, no two brands of health insurance have the same qualities either. So when the national insurance exchange opens up, look for health insurance companies to sharpen their brands and market in full force to consumers --- on television, in print and online --- with distinctive messages they hope will help you decide which company meets your needs.
More choice, commodities pricing, competition for your business and keen brand awareness have driven our basic shopping list for as long as marketing has been in practice. Regardless of how reform turns out, we should expect no less from health insurance carriers.
